Postcard #6: Spearheads

Serrated spearheads of glass made by the Unggumi, Oceanic Peoples. Collected from Western Australia in the early 20th century.

South East London Arts Network members received their 18 postcards to their group studio in the Lee Centre.

They experimented with a range of techniques including making their own glass spearheads.

Diana - a member of SELAN - talks about what interested her about them: "I have to say my favourite was the glass spear heads – that's because I'm interested in glass, I make kiln formed glass – from the technical point of view I found it absolutely fascinating and incredible. Something so beautiful could be used for something horrible – but that's part of the anthropology and how you react to the objects."

Here is a wonderful film made by SELAN showing the project from start to finish.
