Can I claim back travel and lunch expenses?

Engage Volunteers can claim back lunch and travel expenses. For Work and School placements, please contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator.

My school hasn't sent students to the museum before, is this OK?

Yes, although we have been building a relationship with local schools and like to guarantee a placement for them. The Volunteer Co-ordinator will be able to discuss vacancies.

How long does the Schools placement last?

One week in total.

I haven't volunteered in a museum before, does this matter?

Absolutely not! We will ensure that you receive the required training and supervision.

Are the Gardens open all year?

Yes, and we need volunteers for all seasons. In the Autumn and Winter there are lots of leaves to tidy up.

Can I volunteer elsewhere in the museum?

Occasionally opportunities do arise for this to happen. However, we should stress that this is not guaranteed.

As an Engage Volunteer, can I come in on a specific day each week?

Yes this is the prefered method, although some days may already be fully staffed.

As an Engage Volunteer, will I do the same thing all the time?

Absolutely not! You rotate round four or more Activities, indoors and outdoors in the summer, so there's lots of variety.

What's Engage Back Stage?

These are exciting talks which are arranged for volunteers, where you can see how different areas of the museum work. Recent talks include Taxidermy, the Bali Exhibition, Conservation, Natural History and much more.
