African Worlds

The displays feature ancient objects, art works, sculptures, costumes and masks from across Africa.

Our curated panels tell you about the objects from the perspectives of elders, maskers, drummers, diviners, artists and exiles as well as our curators and anthropologists.

The display also showcases artefacts from other countries including Brazil and Trinidad whose cultures were strongly influenced by Africa.

Benin – Beautiful bronze figures which depict the arrival of the first Europeans to Africa.

Igbo Ijele, This vast mask was made specifically for the Horniman and is the only one of its kind on display in Britain.

Egypt – A display of mysterious mummies and mummification objects collected by Elmslie and Frederick Horniman

Haiti and Brazil – in a series of altars that reveal a fascinating insight into non-Western religious beliefs and draw parallels between African societies across the diaspora.
