About this event

Join us for a day of family events and quirky performances inspired by the Horniman Gardens.

The programme will include music on the bandstand, planting activities, vegetable instrument-making workshops, herbal cocktail masterclasses, guerrilla gardening and tours of the gardens by the Horniman gardeners. 

On the Bandstand

Garden acrobatics
12-12.10, 1.30-1.40 & 3.30-3.40pm
Headstand, handstand and juggling in the garden. Roll up and be amazed by Jose Hugo, a fantastic circus artist from Colombia.

Gardening music
12.30-1.15pm
Jo Stephenson and Dan Woods are real-life allotment holders and two of the UK's finest comic songwriters. As well as thinning their lettuces and watering their weeds, they have collaborated on a unique collection of comedy songs about growing your own.

Swing in the Garden
2.30-3.15 & 3.45-4.30pm
Grab your dancing shoes for a buzzin' performance by Ronnie Scott's resident singer Kai Hoffman and her Honey Bees, with their own unique brand of vintage rhythm and blues, sizzlin' Latin jazz and good ol' American swing inspired by the Horniman Gardens. Don't be a shrinking violet, or you'll miss one of the sweetest shows in town!

Flower decoration by Mandinga Arts
The Horniman bandstand will be specially redecorated by carnival experts Mandinga Arts. Mandinga creates extraordinary and innovative outdoor performance costumes, floats and processions, engaging communities in collaboration with skilled professional artists, drawing on European, Latin American and African traditions.

Pothole gardening workshop
12-2pm
Meet Steve Wheen, the ‘pothole gardener’, who creates tiny garden scenes in potholes and cracks are London. Get inspired to tell your own story in a pothole, creating a miniature garden and spreading the joy and happiness of guerrilla gardening on a miniature scale.

Butterfly craft workshops
12-2pm
To celebrate Butterfly Day help us make a butterfly garden with origami and pipe cleaners. Make a butterfly and add it to our display.

Roborigami
12-5pm
Meet Japanese artist Coco Sato, founder of Giant Origami, and discover her temporary installation made of origami robot foxes in the Horniman Gardens.

Herbal cocktails
2-2.15, 3-3.15 & 4-4.15pm
Learn how to make original cocktails with the ingredients grown in the Horniman Gardens. The team of the Gin Garden will show you what plants to use to create drinks, how to infuse gin or how to make delicious syrups after a hard day of gardening. 

Tours the Garden
1-1.30, 2-2.30 & 3-30pm
Meet our Head of Horticulture, Wes Shaw, who will introduce you to our display gardens in summer.

Vegetable instrument making workshop
2.30-4.30pm
After their concert, join Dan and Jo’s instrument-making workshop and learn how to make your own cucumber trumpet, carrot pan pipe or hosepipe tuba.

Planting activities
3-5pm
Make your own recycled hanging basket out of old drinks bottles featuring edible herbs and flowers.
