The Journeys of Georges Méliès (1896 – 1913)
Professional magician and pioneer of cinema, Méliès is the master of fantasy and dream worlds, and the most incredible wizard of moving pictures.
The focus of Scorsese's 'Hugo', the exceptionally talented Méliès produced and directed over 400 films. He also wrote them, designed the sets, costumes and accessories, and was often the main actor. Méliès combined illusion, comic burlesque, and pantomime to treat themes of fantasy in a playful and absurd fashion. He specialised in depicting extreme physical transformations of the human body (such as the dismemberment of heads and limbs) for comic effect. Come with us as we take a journey through the wonderful imaginative world of cinema royalty.
